Traditional machine translation treats documents as strings of words and phrases. AI-powered translation using large language models understands full context โ€” technical terminology, legal phrasing, cultural nuance and document-specific conventions โ€” and produces translations that read naturally in the target language, not just word-for-word substitutions.

Who Uses PDF Translation?

  • Business professionals: Translating contracts, agreements, product documentation, compliance reports and supplier communications.
  • Students and researchers: Translating academic papers, research articles and study materials from international journals.
  • Travellers and expats: Translating visa documents, rental agreements, official notices and government correspondence.
  • Lawyers and legal teams: Getting working translations of foreign-language evidence and legal documents (note: always verify with a certified translator for legal proceedings).
  • Healthcare workers: Understanding patient records, treatment guidelines and research papers from other countries.
  • E-commerce businesses: Translating product catalogues, supplier contracts and import/export documentation.

Supported Languages

The tool supports translation into 50+ major world languages including all European languages (Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Dutch, Polish, Russian, etc.), Asian languages (Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Arabic, Hindi, Urdu, Bengali, etc.) and many others. Select your target language from the dropdown.

Limitations to Be Aware Of

  • The free version translates up to approximately 6,000 characters. For longer documents, use Split PDF to break the document into sections and translate each section separately.
  • Image-based (scanned) PDFs cannot be translated without OCR. Use Google Drive's free OCR to create a text version first.
  • For legally binding documents, always have AI translations reviewed by a qualified human translator before use.
  • Highly specialised technical or medical jargon may occasionally be imprecisely translated. Review outputs carefully.

How AI Translation Differs From Google Translate

Traditional machine translation tools like Google Translate and DeepL work sentence by sentence, translating each fragment independently without considering the surrounding context. Large language model (LLM) translation โ€” as used in this tool โ€” processes the entire document together, maintaining consistent terminology, tone and context throughout. This produces more natural-sounding translations, especially for longer documents where consistency matters.

For example, a technical manual that uses a specific term consistently throughout will have that term translated consistently by an LLM, whereas sentence-by-sentence translation might render the same term differently in different sections. Similarly, formal legal language and academic writing styles are better preserved when the model can see the full document structure.

Preparing Your PDF for Best Translation Results

  • Use a text-based PDF: The document must contain selectable text. Right-click on the text in your PDF viewer โ€” if you can highlight and copy it, the PDF is text-based and will translate well.
  • Remove headers and footers if possible: Repetitive page numbers, confidentiality notices and headers can consume character budget. If the document is very long, consider using Extract Images from PDF to remove image pages first.
  • Split long documents: Use Split PDF to divide long documents into chapters or sections. Translate each section independently, then compile the translations.
  • Check the language: The tool auto-detects the source language, but if your document contains multiple languages (such as a bilingual contract), translation quality will vary by section.
